Fuel Your 40s: The Best Energizing Foods for Busy, High-Achieving Women
Remember that time you needed more energy? You were crashing at the 2pm meeting, or school pick up felt like it must be at 10pm? Yah. I’m with you. As a working mom of four very active, very much not driving yet, boys, I am literally, right there with you.
And we know all the things – “don’t have caffeine after noon.” “Go to bed at the same time every night.” “eat more protein.”
I don’t know about anyone else but a lot of that feels intangible. Like these ideas are floating above our heads and we can never grab onto them. How does one have more energy in the afternoon with caffeine with your 41 and in perimenopause? How does one go to bed at the same time every night when your kids are at sports until various hours each night? And how, might I ask, does one eat 120 grams of protein every day consistently without keeping a food diary?
When I started digging into our habits and how they affect our work and our energy 10 years ago, I learned that our lives are so much more in our control than we believe. We think we don’t have time to take back control. And in a lot of cases, we’re right.
We can’t control the stress of the outside world.
But we can control what we choose to put in our bodies. We can have more energy by focusing on the inside. And I promise, it costs less than your midday Starbucks.
If you need more energy at work, need more energy as a working mom, need more energy to lead your team, start with these habits:
When you’re making a choice about what to eat or grab off the conference table, repeat to yourself the word “FUEL”. What in that moment will fuel your body to be at its best?
Add something spicy. It sounds weird, but adding ginger or cayenne to your meal gives us a powerful boost. Ginger tea can do the trick too
If caffeine is a must in the afternoon, make it a tea. Not only is it less caffeine, it won’t spike your blood sugar, and has an equal amount of calming effects which internally you need later in the day
